“Isn’t She Great” is a fictionalized biography of famous author Jacqueline Susann. Director Andrew Bergman (“It Could Happen to You” 1994) and screenwriter Paul Rudnick collaborated on this dud of a film that features amateurish dialogue from the bad writing and lousy performances due to sloppy direction. These are just a few of the problems plaguing this production.
Bette Midler was just awful in her performance in the lead role. Such slipshod acting! Midler was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress. Co-stars include Nathan Lane, Stockard Channing, David Hyde Pierce, Amanda Peet, John Cleese, John Larroquette, Christopher McDonald, Paul Benedict, Larry Block, Dina Spybey, and Frank Vincent as Aristotle Onassis.
Even genius Burt Bacharach’s musical score was subpar! It is no surprise that “Isn’t She Great” was a huge bomb at the box office for Lobell-Bergman Productions, BBC Films, Marubeni Corporation, Mutual Film Company, Tele-Munchen Group, Toho-Towa Ltd., and Universal Pictures. At least the film is only 95 minutes long!
