My Review

Robert Downey Jr. returns as Tony Stark/Iron Man for the third time, delivering a surprisingly strong and multi-layered performance as the superhero in “Iron Man 3.” Director Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” 2005), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Drew Pearce, was diligent at keeping to the character and format of Marvel Studios’ way of doing things, no doubt dictated by producer Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios. He reports directly to Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger.

Downey is reunited with old friends Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Don Cheadle as James Rhodes, the Iron Patriot. The principal antagonist is Aldrich Killian, played by Guy Pearce, who develops the extremis virus, which gives the carrier superhuman strength and the ability to generate extreme heat. Apparently he has no need for a stove or a microwave oven.

The cast also features Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, William Sadler, Miguel Ferrer, Jon Favreau, Paul Bettany, and Dale Dickey. There are also cameo appearances by Stan Lee, Mark Ruffalo, Bill Maher, and Joan Rivers in her second-to-last film role before her passing in 2014.

All are part of the marvelous entertainment in the very watchable “Iron Man 3,” the seventh film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It did well at the box office for Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, bringing over $1.2 billion into the coffers of The Walt Disney Company.
