My Review

“Interstellar” is an ambitious three hour science fiction film telling the story of a future on earth when scientists must explore the universe for a new home for the human race, as the planet is becoming unlivable because of pollution.

Producer-director Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight Rises” 2012), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jonathan Nolan, has an exciting movie for perhaps the first 90 minutes to 2 hours; after that, “Interstellar” runs out of gas. A wandering storyline and inconsistent plot lines causes the film to loose credibility. Another problem is that segments of the movie are difficult to understand because the dialogue is drowned out by “outer space noise.”

The cast is headed by Matthew McConaughey, who turns in a mediocre performance as an astronaut. Doesn’t he ever perform without his Texas drawl? Others in the big name cast seem to be along for the ride, including Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, John Lithgow, Topher Grace, David Oyelowo, and William Devane.

Beware of the pitfalls before buying your expensive ticket for the intergalactic voyage in “Interstellar.” Lots of space debris to contend with. However, the film was successful at the box office for Legendary Pictures, Syncopy, and Paramount Pictures. “Interstellar” was nominated for five Oscars: Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and winning one for Best Visual Effects.
