My Review

The mediocrity of the Divergent series continues with “Insurgent.” Director Robert Schwentke (“The Time Traveler’s Wife” 2009) and screenwriters Brian Duffield, Akiva Goldsman, and Mark Bomback have made a film with loads of action but featuring flat, one-dimensional characters we do not care about. Just like the first film “Divergent” from last year.

Theo James and Shailene Woodley return as the first couple of the Divergent drama; they are admittedly an appealing presence on the big screen. Kate Winslet does another round as Jeanine Matthews, the big boss of New Chicago. The giant supporting cast includes Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Jai Courtney, Octavia Spencer, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Maggie Q, Naomi Watts, Daniel Dae Kim, Emjay Anthony, Ashley Judd, and Tony Goldwyn.

“Insurgent” was indeed a commercial success for Red Wagon Entertainment, Summit Entertainment, Mandeville Films, and Lionsgate Films.
