“Incendiary” is an independent British film about the aftermath of a terrorist attack at a football (soccer) game in London. Director-screenwriter Sharon Maguire’s storyline plods along, zigzagging from romantic drama to conspiracy theories to the life of a grieving wife and mother who has lost a child.
This unfocused film by Maguire was her first since 2001’s “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” and her rustiness shows. Maybe Maguire is not such a great filmmaker anyway, as the “Diary” series don’t really qualify as great cinema.
A bright spot for the film is the good performances. Michelle Williams does very well in the lead role of a grieving mother, simply referred to as “young mother.” The American actress delivers in a flawless English accent; Williams is one of the most talented actors in Hollywood these days. The cast also includes Ewan McGregor, Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Gleaves, Sidney Johnson, Sasha Behar, Usman Khokhar, Ed Hughes, and Alan Hunter.
Unfortunately for the producers, the hapless “Incendiary” made no money in theatrical release.
