“Ice Station Zebra” is an action-adventure film, pure escapist programming with outstanding special effects, and an all-star cast. It was well-directed by John Sturges (“Bad Day at Black Rock” 1955) and nominated for Academy Awards for special effects and cinematography.
The more than adequate screenplay tells the story of an American nuclear submarine sent to rescue the personnel of a British scientific weather station in the Arctic circle. There is more than meets the eye, however, as the mission is in fact a cover for a highly classified assignment. It was written by Douglas Heyes, Harry Julian Fink, and W. R. Burnett, adapted from the 1963 novel by Alistair MacLean.
The cast includes Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, Patrick McGoohan, Jim Brown, Lloyd Nolan, Gerald S. O’Loughlin, Ted Hartley, Ron Masak, Murray Rose, Sherwood Price, and Joseph Bernard. Michel Legrand was in charge of the musical score. The watchable “Ice Station Zebra” did not earn much money in theatrical release for Filmways and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
