My Review

The inspirational story behind the song “I Can Only Imagine” as skillfully captured on film by directors Andrew Erwin and Jon Erwin. The director brothers, who were also at the helm of the popular faith-based movie “Woodlawn” (2015), tells the true story of Bart Millard of the Christian pop group Mercy Me and how he wrote one of the most popular gospel songs of all time.

Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkie penned the brilliant screenplay, from which Millard was portrayed by J. Michael Finley. The cast also included Dennis Quaid as Bart’s father, Cloris Leachman as his grandmother, Madeline Carroll, Trace Adkins, Priscilla Shirer, Jake B. Miller, Nicole DuPort, who deserves honorable mention for her portrayal of singer Amy Grant. Grant was set to debut the song at a live concert but called Bart Millard to the stage to perform his own composition for the first time in public.

“I Can Only Imagine” opened at number three at the box office on the March 16, 2018, weekend, a great showing for a faith-based film. The very watchable motion picture reminds us what an exciting destiny we have as believers in Jesus Christ, one that we can only imagine.
