My Review

Bill Murray delivers a surprisingly subtle and nuanced performance as America’s 32nd President in “Hyde Park on Hudson.” Murray and the other actors mesh well as an ensemble cast in this story of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s life in the spring of 1939, focusing on his relationship with girlfriend Daisy Suckley and on the visit of the King and Queen of England.

British director Roger Mitchell (“Morning Glory” 2010) did a particularly outstanding job at the helm of this picture. Though set in upstate New York and employing mostly American actors, the filming took place entirely in England.

The supporting cast includes Laura Linney as Daisy, the President’s sixth cousin who became one of his mistresses, Samuel West and Olivia Colman as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, respectively, Elizabeth Wilson as the President’s mother, and Olivia Williams as Eleanor Roosevelt.

The cinematography by Lol Crawley is quite good, and, coupled with viewing Bill Murray’s wide acting range, are reasons enough to get the DVD and watch “Hyde Park on Hudson,” a failure at the box office for UK production companies Daybreak Pictures, Film4 Productions, and Free Range Films, with releasing handled by Universal Pictures.
