My Review

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is a Christmas fantasy-comedy film. As the residents of Whoville prepare for Christmas, a hostile green creature named the Grinch, who despises the holiday, attempts to sabotage their plans. Director Ron Howard (“Cocoon” 1985) and screenwriters Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman adapted the film from the 1957 children’s book of the same name by Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel.

Ron Howard, who also produced with Brian Grazer, presided over a production that provides eye candy galore for the viewers. There are colorful sets and expert makeup for the performers. It won the Oscar for Best Makeup and was nominated for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.

Jim Carrey does his usual energetic thing in the title role; some call it over-acting. Whatever the case, he seemed to sneak in some adlibs into his performance. The supporting cast includes Taylor Momsen, Molly Shannon, Bill Irwin, Christine Baranski, T. J. Thyne, Deep Roy, Mary Stein, and Jeffrey Tambor as the Mayor of Whoville. Appearing in small roles are Clint Howard, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Anthony Hopkins as The Narrator.

As is usual for Ron Howard, Universal Pictures is his studio of choice. Whoville can be viewed on the Universal Studio Tram Tour, just before the “Psycho” hotel and house. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is part of the furniture there, a big hit in general release for Imagine Entertainment and Universal Pictures.
