My Review

“Hook” is a fantasy adventure film about a high-powered attorney who has forgotten about his childhood as Peter Pan. He gets back in touch with the past when Captain Hook kidnaps his children and he must return to Neverland to rescue them. Director Steven Spielberg (“Jaws” 1975) put together a mildly entertaining movie which would not be considered one of his best motion pictures, nor one of his worst. The adequate screenplay was written by Jim V. Hart and Nick Castle, adapted from the 1911 novel “Peter and Wendy” by J. M. Barrie.

At the head of the cast is Dustin Hoffman as Captain James Hook. He is the standout performer in this picture. Two cast members who seem to be running on autopilot are Robin Williams as Peter Banning/Peter Pan and Julia Roberts as Tinker Bell. Mediocrity is the name of the game with these two. Co-stars include Bob Hoskins, Maggie Smith, Phil Collins, Caroline Goodall, Charlie Korsmo, Kelly Rowan, Dante Basco, and Arthur Malet. Familiar faces appearing in uncredited cameos include George Lucas, Carrie Fisher, Jimmy Buffet, Glenn Close, and David Crosby.

The watchable “Hook” was popular in theatrical release, the fourth highest grossing film of 1991, for producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, Amblin Entertainment, and TriStar Pictures. It was nominated for five Academy Awards (zero wins) for best art direction, costume design, makeup, visual effects, and song, “When You’re Alone,” music by John Williams and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. In fact, the Grand Maestro Williams was in charge of the entire musical score for “Hook.” Also worth noting is Julia Roberts’ well-earned nomination for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actress for her role as Miss Tinker Bell.
