“Honeysuckle Rose” is a romantic western drama that tells the story of a country music singer who becomes involved with a woman on the road that is not his wife. The fireworks and the melodrama proceeds from there. Director Jerry Schatzberg (“The Seduction of Joe Tynan” 1979) did an adequate job at the helm of this drama that does hold the viewer’s interest for two hours. The passable screenplay was penned by John Binder, Carol Sobieski, and William D. Wittlift.
The charisma and talents of the stars really did hold this film together. Willie Nelson made his feature film debut here as country singer Buck Bonham, a role that fits him like a glove. He gave the audience lots of music to enjoy, with songs such as “On the Road Again” the big feature, which earned the film its sole Academy Award nominee as Best Original Song. The cast also includes Dyan Cannon as his wife, Amy Irving as the other woman, Slim Pickens and Priscilla Pointer (Irving’s real life mom) as Irving’s parents, as well as Diana Scarwid, Charles Levin, Mickey Rooney Jr., Lane Smith, and Grady Martin, Jeannie Seely, and Emmylou Harris as themselves.
The very watchable “Honeysuckle Rose” was successful in theatrical release for Major Studio Partners and Warner Bros. Pictures. Amy Irving won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actress.
