My Review

“Home Alone 3” is a crime comedy film about an eight-year-old boy in Chicago who must fend off four bumbling international criminals who are seeking a top-secret microchip they had inadvertently stashed in his toy car. Sound familiar? That’s because producer-screenwriter John Hughes has made this second sequel to his first two “Home Alone” megahit movies of 1990 and 1992. Hughes put forth the effort to make this a high quality project with director Raja Gosnell. And he has a completely different cast.

The stars are Alex D. Linz as Alex Pruitt. capably replacing Macaulay Culkin of the first two films. Co-stars include Haviland Morris and Kevin Kilner as his parents, Marian Seldes as the elderly neighbor, Olek Krupa, Rya Kihlstedt, Lenny Von Dohlen, David Thornton as the heavies of the piece, Christopher Curry and Pat Healy as the FBI agents, James Saito as the mob boss, Neil Flynn and Baxter Harris as local policemen, and Seth Smith and Scarlett Johansson as Alex’s brother and sister. This was one of Johansson’s earlies roles at the age of 13.

The very watchable made-for-television film “Home Alone 3” had a million laughs, not a billion laughs like the first two films, but still a respectable hit for producer John Hughes, Fox Family Films, Hughes Entertainment, and 20th Century Fox. It was nominated for a Razzie Award for Worst Remake or Sequel at the 18th Golden Raspberry Awards.
