My Review

“Hollywood Shuffle” is a satirical comedy film that takes a look at racial stereotypes of African-Americans in motion pictures, based on producer-director Robert Townsend’s experiences in auditioning for movie roles. Townsend, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Keenen Ivory Wayans, filled the movie with hilarious skits and comedy bits.

Robert Townsend also heads the cast, playing aspiring actor Bobby Taylor. Co-stars include Anne-Marie Johnson, Starletta DuPois, David McKnight, Lou B. Washington, Brad Sanders, John Witherspoon, Eugene Robert Glazer, Lisa Mende, Dom Irrera, Grand L. Bush, Damon Wayans, Keenan Ivory Wayans, and Helen Martin as Bobby’s grandmother. Ms. Martin was famous for her role as Wanda on the CBS sitcom “Good Times” 1974-1979).

The watchable “Hollywood Shuffle” was a modest success in theatrical release for producer Robert Townsend and The Samuel Goldwyn Company.
