My Review

“Hocus Pocus” is a Halloween comedy film about three witches from 1693 in Salem, Massachusetts, who are suddenly translated three hundred years into the future to 1993, on Halloween night. The three villainous and mischievous women cause all kinds of trouble and hijinks, contributing greatly to the humorous situations in the film. Director Kenny Ortega (“Newsies” 1992) did a good job choreographing the large cast amidst the comedic situations, from a well written screenplay by Mick Garris and Neil Cuthbert

The film is a good showcase for the comedic talents of the three principal stars, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. They really hammed it up in these roles. The supporting cast includes Omri Katz, who was John Ross Ewing III, J. R. & Sue Ellen’s son, on CBS’s “Dallas” for many years (1983-1991); Doug Jones, who would go on to stardom, especially in science fiction roles, like Captain Saru of TV’s “Star Trek: Discovery;” and Sean Murray, who would become NCIS special agent Timothy McGee from 2003 to right now! Others include Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw, Charles Rocket, Stephanie Faracy, Jason Marsden, Kathleen Freeman, Larry Bagby, and uncredited cameos by Garry Marshall and Penny Marshall.

The entertaining and watchable “Hocus Pocus” was successful at the box office for Walt Disney Pictures and Buena Vista Pictures Distribution. A sequel called “Hocus Pocus 2” was released in 2022 on Disney+, with a “Hocus Pocus 3” in development.
