My Review

“Hillsong: Let Hope Arise” is a documentary on Hillsong United, a contemporary Christian worship band from Australia. Director Michael John Warren (“Shrek the Musical” 2013) did a good job of balancing the live concert footage, behind the scenes interviews, and visits to band members’ homes to form an interesting look at one of the most popular Christian rock bands. On any Sunday, it is estimated that more than fifty million people are singing their songs in churches around the world.

Band leader Joel Houston tells the amazing story of how Hillsong United was formed from the youth group in his father’s congregation, Hillsong Church of Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, Australia. Pastor Brian Houston and his wife Bobbie Houston are interviewed, as are band members Jad Gillies, Taya Smith, Jonathan Douglass, Dylan Thomas, and others. “Hillsong: Let Hope Rise” was distributed by Pure Flix Entertainment.
