“Hidden Figures” is an excellent drama about three African-American female mathematicians who worked at NASA in 1961, with one of them providing crucial calculations for the flight trajectories for Project Mercury, which helped the U. S. to compete with the Soviets in the Space Race.
Director Theodore Melfi (“St. Vincent” 2014), who co-wrote the screenplay with Allison Schroeder, created a well-paced and watchable two hour movie based on the 2016 book by Margot Lee Shetterly.
The cast has great chemistry, especially the three principals, Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae playing the influential Space Race trio. Spencer was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, along with the film’s nods for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Other performers in the 20th Century Fox box office success “Hidden Figures” are Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Mahershala Ali, Rhoda Griffis, Aldis Hodge, and Glen Powell turning in a charismatic turn as astronaut John Glenn.
