My Review

The History Channel put together handsomely produced miniseries called “Hatfields & McCoys,” based on the famous feud between two American families in the Appalachian Mountain region of West Virginia and Kentucky from 1863 to 1891.

Director Kevin Reynolds (“Waterworld” 1995) and teleplay writers Ted Mann and Ronald Parker did an outstanding job in making a complex story into an easy to follow motion picture of four hours and fifty minutes. It features high production values including marvelous cinematography, original costumes and makeup, art direction, original music score, and stand-out performances from major and minor cast members. Not a slouch in the bunch.

Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton played the heads of the Hatfield and McCoy families, respectively. Both used their “western” peronas to the hilt in this film. Other performers include Tom Berenger, Powers Boothe, Jena Malone, Mare Winningham, Boyd Hollbrook, Linday Pulsipher, Ronan Yibert, Sarah Parish, Noah Taylor, Matt Barr, Andrew Howard, and Joe Absolom, easily recognizable from his role as Al Large in the “Doc Martin” television show from England.

“Hatfields & McCoys” earned sixteen Emmy nominations, with five winners: Kevin Costner for Lead Actor, Tom Berenger for Supporting Actor, as well as Makeup, Editing, and Sound. The original airdate for this watchable three part History Channel miniseries was May 28,29, and 30, 2012.
