My Review

“Harum Scarum” is a musical comedy film starring Elvis Presley as a movie star promoting his latest movie in the Middle East when he is kidnapped by local thugs, who mistake his swashbuckling movie image for the real thing. They want him to use his martial arts skills to kill their king, with all sorts of comedy proceeding from there.

Director Gene Nelson (“Kissin’ Cousins” 1964) really did not put together a top-rate film, but which one of Elvis’ pictures was? This is a typical Elvis vehicle filled with great music, a lousy script (Gerald Drayson Adams, in this case), and silly antics going on all over the place.

Co-stars having fun with Presley include Mary Ann Mobley, Fran Jeffries, Michael Ansara, Billy Barty, Brenda Benet, Jay Novello, Jack Costanzo, Barbara Werle, and Gail Gilmore. The watchable “Harum Scarum” was successful at the box office for Four-Leaf Productions and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
