My Review

Paul Newman stars as private detective Lew Harper in the exciting mystery “Harper.” This classy drama was smartly directed by Jack Smight (“I’d Rather Be Rich” 1964) from a tightly written screenplay by William Goldman. It was adapted from the 1949 novel “The Moving Target” by Ross Macdonald. Harper’s big assignment in this picture is to search for a multi-millionaire, missing less than twenty-four hours. The man’s wife is convinced there has been foul play.

The supporting cast includes some big names like Lauren Bacall, Robert Wagner, Julie Harris, Janet Leigh, Pamela Tiffin, Arthur Hill, Shelley Winters, Martin West, Roy Jensen, Strother Martin, Eugene Iglesias, and Harold Gould as Sheriff Spanner.

The very watchable “Harper” was filmed all around Southern California in 1965 with big name stars, all contributing to the old Hollywood atmospherics of the film. It was a big hit at the box office for Warner Bros. Pictures, with a sequel released in 1975 called “The Drowning Pool.”
