“Harold and the Purple Crayon” is the story of a boy who can draw anything he wants into existence with his purple crayon. When he grows up, he finds out that his powers can lead to more problems than he imagined possible. Director Carlos Saldanha (“Ice Age: The Meltdown” 2006) put together an entertaining, albeit formulaic, film, which was adapted from the 1955 children’s book by Crockett Johnson, with the screenplay penned by David Guion and Michael Handelman.
Zachary Levi is a good choice to play Harold, the man with the purple crayon. This role fits right into his wheelhouse. Co-stars include Lil Rey Howery, Benjamin Bottani, Zooey Deschanel, Jemaine Clement, Tanya Reynolds, Alfred Molina, Ravi Patel, Camille Guaty, and Pete Gardner. Unfortunately, this very watchable movie, “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” was a flop at the box office for Columbia Pictures, Davis Entertainment, TSG Entertainment, and Sony Pictures Releasing.
