“Hardball” is a sports drama movie about a man who is forced to coach an inner-city baseball team to cover his gambling debts. Producer-director Brian Robbins (“Varsity Blues” 1999) and screenwriter John Gatins have given us a film we have seen before (remember “The Bad News Bears” 1976?), with bad execution by the director and sloppy writing. However, it does have some heart-warming moments and somehow works.
The cast includes Keanu Reeves, Diane Lane, D. B. Sweeney, Mark Margolis, Graham Beckel, Mike McGlone, Sterling “Steelo” Brim, Sammy Sosa as himself, and Michael B. Jordan in his first major role as a child actor. Reeves earned the Golden Raspberry Award (“Razzies”) for Worst Actor. “Hardball” was a modest success at the box office, released on September 14, 2001, three days after the September 11 attacks.
