“Hacksaw Ridge” is the true story of World War II combat medic Desmond Doss, a pacifist and a Seventh Day Adventist Christian who refused to carry a firearm of any kind. He was the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor, by President Harry S Truman, for rescuing 75 soldiers in the battle of Hacksaw Ridge on Okinawa in 1944.
Director Mel Gibson (“The Passion of the Christ” 2004) wove together Doss’ story on screen with great skill, balancing gruesome battle scenes with the bravery of his rescues. He instilled “Hacksaw Ridge” with fantastic production values, especially cinematography, sound editing, sound mixing, and film editing, with the latter two winning Oscars. Total of six nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Sound Editing, and Best Actor for Andrew Garfield in the lead role.
Garfield was stellar as Doss, personifying a Christian man’s stand of conscience against big opposition. The supporting cast includes Sam Worthington, Hugo Weaving, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Rachel Griffiths, Vince Vaughn, and Milo Gibson, son of the director.
Robert Schenkkan and Andrew Knight wrote the sterling screenplay, based on the 2004 documentary film “The Conscientious Objector,” directed by Terry Benedict. “Hacksaw Ridge” is a very watchable motion picture from Mel Gibson’s Icon Film Distribution, Lionsgate Films, and other independent studios, profitable in general release in theaters.
