My Review

“Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant” tells the amazing story, set in the Afghanistan war, of a local interpreter who risks his life to carry an injured U. S. Army sergeant, who he has been working for, across 100 kilometers of Taliban-infested mountain and desert terrain to safety.

Producer-director Guy Ritchie (“Aladdin” 2019) was in charge of this tightly directed film that had little down time or slow moments. “The Covenant” was completely engrossing for the two hour length. Ritchie co-wrote the screenplay with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. “The Covenant” is probably the best motion picture Guy Ritchie has ever made.

The performances were simply outstanding. Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim dominated most of the film’s scenes as Sgt. Kinley and interpreter Ahmed, respectively. The supporting cast includes Alexander Ludwig, Antony Starr, Emily Beecham, Jonny Lee Miller, Jason Wong, Sean Sagar, and Bobby Schofield.

“The Covenant” came in at number three at the Apr. 21-23, 2023, box office for producer Ritchie and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. However, total receipts were less than the production costs so unfortunately the film was not profitable.
