My Review

“Grown Ups” is a comedy movie telling the story of three friends from junior high school who reunite for the funeral of their basketball coach. They rent a lake house to spend some time together, with all sorts of “comedy” proceeding from there. However, director Dennis Dugan (“Happy Gilmore” 1996) and screenwriters Adam Sandler and Fred Wolf put together a film with loads of low-brow and trite material which make the 102 minute running time move very slowly.

The cast is equally uninspiring, with dismal performances from the five principals: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, and Rob Schneider. Ditto for co-stars Selma Hayak, Maria Bello, Joyce Van Patten, Maya Rudolph, Tim Meadows, Steve Buscemi, Colin Quinn, Ebony Jo-Ann, Di Quon, Jake Goldberg, Cameron Boyce, Jamie Chung, Nadji Jeter, China Ann McClain, Jonathan Loughran, and Richie Minervini.

The unwatchable “Grown Ups” was successful at the box office for producer Adam Sandler, Happy Madison Productions, Relativity Media, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures Releasing. Rob Schneider was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actor. A sequel called “Grown Ups 2” was released in 2013.
