Sandra Bullock and stunning special effects are the stars of the science fiction thriller “Gravity.” Bullock’s intense performance dominates the picture, demonstrating what can happen to an astronaut who is struggling for survival when a tragic accident occurs in outer space. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Producer-director Alfonso Cuaron (“Children of Men” 2006) has put together one of the best movies of the year, and won the Oscar for Best Director for his efforts. He co-wrote the excellent screenplay with Jonas Cuaron; pacing, dialogue, and action are all very well coordinated. Production values are excellent in “Gravity,” including Steven Price’s musical score, Emmanuel Lubazki’s cinematography, Mark Sanger & Alfonso Cuarton’s editing, and Tim Weber’s marvelous FX. The audience’s collective eyes are continually drawn to the remarkable views of planet Earth behind the actors’ performances.
Bullock’s co-stars include George Clooney as her fellow astronaut and Ed Harris as the voice of Mission Control. “Gravity” was very successful in theatrical release for Al Cuaron and Warner Bros. Pictures. It was nominated for a total of ten Academy Awards, with seven winners including Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects.
