My Review

“Good Night, and Good Luck” is the dramatization of the true story of CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow and his attempt to expose and discredit the virulent anti-communist campaign of Sen. Joseph McCarthy in the 1950’s. Director George Clooney (“Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” 2002) put together an intelligent and well-structured film which he wisely limited to a 93 minute running time. Any longer and the movie would have become a boring art house cinema product. Clooney wrote the script with Grant Heslov.

The cast turned out excellent performances including David Strathairn as Morrow, George Clooney as producer Fred Friendly, Jeff Daniels as director of CBS News, Frank Langella as CBS head Bill Paley, as well as Patricia Clarkson, Robert Downey Jr., Ray Wise, Tate Donovan, Glenn Morshower, Helen Slayton-Hughes, and Grant Heslov. Appearing as themselves in archival footage are Joseph McCarthy, Lee Liberace, Roy Cohn, and President Dwight Eisenhower.

The watchable black-and-white film “Good Night, and Good Luck” was a success at the box office for producer Grant Heslov, 2929 Entertainment, Participant Productions, Section Eight Productions, Davis Films, Redbus Pictures, Tohokushinsha, and Warner Independent Pictures. It was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Strathairn), Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, and Best Cinematography (Robert Elswit).
