My Review

“Go West” is a western comedy film featuring the burlesque-style humor of the Marx Brothers. The story has Groucho, Harpo, and Chico Marx headed to the American west hoping to make their fortune panning for gold. Complications arise, leading to some comedy and hilarity. Laughs can be inconsistent, due to uneven direction by Edward Buzzell (“Honolulu” 1939) and a spotty script by Irving Brecher, and the often dry and chaotic comedy of the Marx Brothers themselves.

Co-stars include John Carroll and Diana Lewis, who provide a romantic subplot. There are also musical numbers from singer Judy MacCloy. Other cast includes Walter Woolf King, Robert Barrat, and George Lessey as the president of the railroad. Some of the railroad scenes were filmed on the Sierra Railroad in Tuolumne County, California. “Go West” was a production of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer with an 80 minute running time.
