Deborah Walley replaced Sandra Dee as surfer-girl Gidget in the second film “Gidget Goes Hawaiian” in 1961. Walley turned in a respectable performance in her big screen debut, capably directed by Paul Wendkos, who also was at the helm of the original “Gidget” in 1959. The script was penned by Ruth Brooks Flippen.
James Darren reprised his role as Moondoggie, as well as contributing some good musical numbers. Joby Baker also returned as fellow surfer Judge Hamilton. Carl Reiner and Jean “Jeff” Donnell played Gidget’s parents. Others in the cast include Michael Callan, Peggy Cass, Eddie Foy Jr., Vicky Trickett, and Bart Patton. “Gidget Goes Hawaiian” was filmed on location at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and in Waikiki, and was a hit at the box office for Jerry Bresler Productions and Columbia Pictures.
