My Review

“Giant” is an epic tale of a wealthy Texas rancher, his wife, and their children, and their life together over twenty-five years. Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson are at the top of the cast in this glossy soap opera, with Dennis Hopper, Fran Bennett, and Carroll Baker playing their adult children. The rest of the cast includes Mercedes McCambridge, Sal Mineo, Elsa Cardenas, Jane Withers, Earl Holliman, Paul Fix, Rod Taylor, Alexander Scourby, Monte Hale, and James Dean in his final role as Jeff Rink, the cow hand who becomes a millionaire oilman. Dean died in a car crash only a few weeks after filming of this picture was completed.

The well written screenplay by Fred Guiol and Ivan Moffat is an excellent adaptation of the 1952 novel by Edna Ferber. Production values are top-rate, with a wonderful musical score by Dimitri Tiomkin, and beautiful cinematography by William C. Mellor. “Giant” was a box office sensation for producer George Stevens and Warner Bros. Pictures, the third highest-grossing film of 1956. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning one for Best Director.
