My Review

“Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” is a musical comedy film showcasing the talents of Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. They sing and dance and do comedy in this story about the romantic adventures of two single women. Director Howard Hawks (“The Thing From Another World” 1951) created a glossy musical that has become a classic, especially the iconic scene where Monroe performs “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.”

The film is characterized by quality production values, starting with a well written script by Charles Lederer, based on the 1949 stage play, which is in turn based on the 1925 book by Anita Loos. Jack Cole was in charge of the excellent choreography, with music written by Hoagy Carmichael, Harold Adamson, Jule Styne, and Leo Robin.

Co-stars include Charles Coburn, Elliot Reid, Tommy Nooman, George Winslow, Steven Geray, Howard Wendell, Norma Varden, Mario Dalio as the magistrate, and George Chakiris in an uncredited role early in his career. “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” was popular in theatrical release for producer Sol C. Spiegel and 20th Century Fox.
