My Review

“Gaslight” is a psychological thriller movie about a young woman whose husband slowly manipulates her into believing she is slipping into insanity. His goal is to gain control of her money and property. Director George Cukor (“The Philadelphia Story” 1940) put together this dandy of a thriller with great production values, an outstanding script (John Van Druten, Walter Reisch, John L. Balderston), and electrifying performances by major stars.

Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman play the lead roles to the hilt, with an excellent supporting cast. They include Joseph Cotten as the tenacious police detective, Dame May Whitty as Miss Bessie, and Angela Lansbury as the maid. This was Lansbury’s film debut, in a career that would last until 2022, when she starred in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” her final movie appearance.

“Gaslight” was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning two: Best Actress (Bergman) and Best Art Direction/Black and White. It was a hit in theatrical release for producer Arthur Hornblow Jr. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
