“Galaxy Quest” is a satirical science fiction comedy film telling the story of has-been stars of a 1970’s scifi television show who are beamed aboard an actual alien spacecraft. The aliens turn to them for help in overcoming an oppressive regime in their own star system, as they believe the show is an actual documentation of real-life heroics. The comedy and drama proceeds from there, well handled by director Dean Parisot (“Home Fries” 1998) and screenwriters David Howard and Robert Gordon.
The story is well paced, seamless in its composition, and also displays good character development for a science fiction movie with a large, ensemble cast. The players include Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell, Enrico Colantoni, Missy Pyle, Justin Long, Rainn Wilson, Jed Rees, and Heidi Swenberg, who was well-known for her recurring role of Susan Ross (George’s fiancee) on NBC’s “Seinfeld” (1992-1997).
Jerzy Zielinski was thoroughly professional in his handling of the diverse cinematography, everything from space ship sets to outdoor filming in Goblin Valley State Park in Utah. The visual effects were handled by George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic. The watchable “Galaxy Quest” is a favorite among science fiction fans, especially “Star Trekkies” due to its similarity to the Gene Roddenberry franchise. It was a modest hit at the box office for Gran Via Productions and DreamWorks Pictures.
