My Review

The special military unit called the G. I. Joe Team are called upon to battle an evil organization that is threatening world peace by using an army of nanobots in “G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.” Director Stephen Sommers (“The Mummy” 1999) filled the movie with lots of action sequences and great special effects, but was short on a consistent plot and weak performances by the actors. The screenplay was sloppily written by Stuart Beatie, David Elliot, and Paul Lovett.

The story was based on Hasbro’s G. I. Joe toy franchise and on the comic book and cartoon series. The cast includes Dennis Quaid, Sienna Miller, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akkinnuoye-Agbaje, Lee Byung-hun, Rachel Nichols, Said Taghmaoui, Karolina Kurkova, and Brendan Fraser in an uncredited cameo as Sgt. Geoffrey Stone. Jonathan Pryce appeared as the President of the United States!

Despite many shortcomings, “G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” performed well enough at the box office for Spyglass Entertainment, Di Bonaventura Pictures, Hasbro, and Paramount Pictures to authorize a sequel which was released in 2013.
