My Review

“G. I. Blues” is Elvis Presley’s first movie after he was discharged from the Army in 1960. Art imitates life in the film’s storyline where Elvis plays an officer who hopes to open up a nightclub after leaving the service. Director Norman Taurog (“Visit to a Small Planet” 1960) loaded the film with high-quality musical numbers for Elvis’ return to the big screen. Musical duties were handled by Joseph L. Lilley, with the soundtrack nominated for two Grammy Awards.

Co-stars in the big show are Juliet Prowse, Robert Ivers, James Douglas, Leticia Roman, Sigrid Maier, and Jeremy Slate. “G. I. Blues” was successful in theatrical release for producer Hal B. Wallis, Hal Wallis Productions, and Paramount Pictures. The profitability of this project ensured the formulaic nature of most of Presley’s films throughout the decade of the 1960’s. In other words, he would be making more of the same for quite some time.
