Walt Disney Animation does it again with their latest hit “Frozen,” which won two Oscars including Best Animated Feature. Loosely based on the 1844 Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale “The Snow Queen,” this film tells the story of a princess who must separate herself from her sister and her kingdom because of her mysterious powers that causes her to freeze everything she touches. Her sibling embarks on a journey to find her seemingly chilly sister.

The well-written screenplay by Jennifer Lee is witty, humorous, and dramatic. Lee also shared directorial duties with Chris Buck; the pair were outstanding at the helm of this instant animation classic. The high-quality, Broadway-worthy songs were composed by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. Their song “Let It Go” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Christophe Beck composed the musical score.

The voice cast includes Kristen Bell as Anna, princess of Arendelle, and Idina Menzel as Elsa, her older sister with magical ice powers. Others include Jonathan Groff, Santino Fontana, Alan Tudyk, Ciaran Hinds, Josh Gad, Chris Williams, Paul Briggs, Maurice LaMarche, and director-writer Jennifer Lee as the Queen of Arendelle, the mother of Anna and Elsa.

The animation is very colorful, with the town of Arendelle seemingly designed with Norway in mind. “Frozen” brought in over $1.2 billion for Walt Disney Pictures, and is the 53rd animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, which started with “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” back in 1937, produced by Walt Disney himself.
