The Best Picture of 1953 is…..”From Here to Eternity.” This is the story of three U. S. Army soldiers stationed in Hawaii in the months leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Director Fred Zinnemann (“High Noon” 1952) kept a tight rein at the helm of this enormous production, which has great production values, good writing, and outstanding performances. Daniel Taradash penned the screenplay, adapted from the 1951 novel of the same name by James Jones.
At the head of the cast list is Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift,, and Frank Sinatra. Their personas and talent set the tone for the two hour film, with co-stars Donna Reed, Deborah Kerr, Ernest Borgnine, Jack Warden, Philip Ober, Mickey Shaughnessy, George Reeves, Claude Akins, Merle Travis, Harry Bellaver, and Tim Ryan. This very watchable black-and-white film classic “From Here to Eternity” was a massive hit at the box office for producer Buddy Adler and Columbia Pictures.
The movie was nominated for thirteen Academy Awards, winning eight: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Sinatra), Best Supporting Actress (Reed), Best Cinematography (Burnett Guffey), Best Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound. Non-winners for “From Here to Eternity” include Best Actor (Clift and Lancaster), Best Actress (Kerr), Best Costume Design, and Best Music Score (George Dunning and Morris Stoloff)
