“Freud’s Last Session” is the story of a fictional meeting between C. S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud. The pair are of the opposite opinion on nearly every issue, especially the topic of the existence of God. The avowed atheist Freud greatly resents Lewis’ recent conversion to evangelical Protestant Christianity, and continually needles Lewis on the subject. Lewis often has an educated retort, and other times has nothing to say.
Other subjects range from fellow author J. R. R. Tolkien, their individual family histories, Lewis’ post traumatic stress disorder from World War I, the future of mankind, to the current World War II, which started only days before this “last session” in September, 1939. The film was expertly handled by director Matthew Brown, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mark St. Germain.
The stars of the show, Anthony Hopkins as Freud and Matthew Goode as Lewis, were at the top of their game here. Co-stars include Liv Lisa Fries, Jodi Balfour, Jeremy Northam, and Orla Brady. The very watchable “Freud’s Last Session” had only minor income at the box office for Screen Ireland, Last Session Productions, Subotica Productions, 14 Sunset, Vertigo Releasing, and Sony Pictures Classics.
The film ending note states that Sigmund Freud met with an unidentified “Oxford don” in the last days of his life, who could have been C. S. Lewis. Freud passed away on September 23, 1939.
