My Review

“Freelance” is an action film telling the story of a retired Army Special Forces agent who takes a job providing security for an American journalist as she travels to the mythical South American country of Paldonia to interview the president of the country. They run into trouble, as one might expect, leading to drama and comedy.

Director Pierre Morel (“District 13” 2004) and screenwriter Jacob Lentz did a good job of putting together an entertaining film. It was universally panned by critics, most likely due to the predictable nature of the plot and storyline. But this column found “Freelance” to be an acceptable diversion and watchable escapist programming, even if there is really nothing new in the material.

The cast delivered good performances, including John Cena in the lead role, Alison Brie as the reporter, Juan Pablo Rava as the Latin American dictator, Alice Eve as Cena’s wife, Marton Csokas as the colonel, and Christian Slater as Cena’s boss. “Freelance” did not perform at the box office for AGC Studios, Endurance Media. WideAngle Films, and Relativity Media.
