My Review

“Fracture” is a crime drama that we have seen before: A man shoots his wife, sending her into a coma, gets off on a technicality, and then an ADA goes on a campaign to prove his guilt. The difference here is that Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling bring their unique and maybe superior talents to their respective roles, breathing new life into a ho-hum plot, from a passable screenplay by Daniel Pyne and Glenn Gers.

Hopkins brings an engrossing deviousness to the part of a wealthy aeronautical engineer who discovers his wife is having an affair. We actually find ourselves rooting for him until we realize that he did commit an illegal act. Former child star Gosling, one of The Walt Disney Company’s Mickey Mouse Club members in the early 1990’s with Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, has matured into one of the best actors in Hollywood. His portrays an intense dedication as the assistant district attorney.

Director Gregory Hoblit (“Hart’s War” 2002) ensured good production values, especially with the cinematography by Kramer Morganthau. Superior filming in Encino, the Hollywood Hills, and around downtown Los Angleles added to the drama of “Fracture,” a watchable movie successful in theatrical release for Castle Rock Entertainment, New Line Cinema, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
