My Review

“For Me and My Gal” is a classic MGM musical where Judy Garland and Gene Kelly play two vaudevillians during World War I who are on the verge of hitting it big when Kelly receives a draft notice. Director Busby Berkeley (“Fast and Furious” 1939) put together an entertaining musical romantic comedy with great production values, fantastic music, and legendary performances. The outstanding screenplay was written by Richard Sherman, Fred F. Finklehoffe, Sid Silvers, from a story by Howard Emmet Rogers.

Judy Garland and Gene Kelly are the stars of the show, a collaboration so successful that Metro paired them together for five more pictures. This was Kelly’s feature film debut, and was also Garland’s first adult role. Co-stars include George Murphy, Martha Eggerth, Ben Blue, Stephen McNally, and Keenan Wynn. The watchable “For Me and My Gal” was a box office sensation, the tenth highest grossing film of 1942, from producer Arthur Freed and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

The movie was nominated for one Academy Award for Best Score (Roger Edens and Georgie Stoll). The five other movies with Gene Kelly and Judy Garland are “Thousands Cheer” (1943), “Ziegfeld Follies” (1945), “The Pirate” (1948), “Words and Music” (1948), and “Summer Stock” 1950).
