My Review

The “Fast and Furious” movie series moves into the mainstream action-adventure genre in “Fast and Furious 6.” The producers (which includes star Vin Diesel) have moved away from the car racing theme of the previous films, hoping to grab a share of wider audience acceptance. They have succeeded, with box office receipts totaling well over $700 million this summer.

The story revisits the professional criminal gang led by Dominic Toretto (Diesel), who have retired from their previous activities. Government agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) offers to clear their criminal records in exchange for helping him to take out a mercenary group led by Owen Shaw (Luke Evans).

Most of the previous cast returns, along with some newcomers: Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, Sung Kang, Gina Carano, John Ortiz, Michelle Rodriguez, Gal Gadot, Elsa Pataky, and Jason Statham in an uncredited cameo.

The screenplay by Chris Morgan is certainly adequate. Competent direction by Justin Lin (“Fast Five” 2011) helps make “Fast and Furious 6” a watchable movie. Another sequel should be out in a couple of years.
