My Review

“Far From the Madding Crowd” is a pretentious story about an independent single woman being pursued by three very different male suitors. This obnoxious feminist statement of a motion picture was based on the 1874 novel by Thomas Hardy, adapted by screenwriter David Nicholls and directed by Thomas Vinterberg (“The Hunt” 2012).

The actors did their thing well enough. The cast includes Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen, Tom Sturridge, Juno Temple, Jessica Barden, Sam Phillips, and Tilly Vosburgh. Production values were not to be faulted, with beautiful cinematography by Charlotte Bruus Christensen and a great musical score by Craig Armstrong.

These are still not positive enough characteristics to recommend this BBC Films and Fox Searchlight Pictures project. The public evidently agreed, as movie-goers stayed far away from “Far From the Madding Crowd,” a bomb at the box office.
