“Fantastic Four” is a poor attempt to make a comic book story into an action-adventure motion picture. Poor direction by Josh Trank (“Chronicle” 2012) and lackluster screenplay by Jeremy Slater, Simon Kinberg, and Trank in this third version seem to lack the excitement of Walt Disney’s new group of Marvel superheroes. This is the last of the “Fantastic 4” films to come out under 20th Century Fox, until Disney’s purchase of Fox in 2019.
The cast did have some zest on the screen, but not much. Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordon, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell did demonstrate a small amount of appeal on the big screen, along with Reg E. Cathey, Tobey Kebbell, Tim Blake Nelson, Dan Castellaneta. Judging by box office receipts, the movie-going public has stated that the “Fantastic Four” is not fantastic enough.
