“Exodus” is an epic motion picture dealing with events surrounding the founding of the state of Israel in 1948. The name of the film is taken from the ship Exodus which transported 611 Jewish refugees from the island of Cyprus to the Holy Land in 1947.
This high drama was meticulously directed by Otto Preminger (“Anatomy of a Murder” 1959) with an excellent screenplay by Dalton Trumbo. It was adapted from the 1958 novel of the same name by Leon Uris. With this outstanding talent in charge, it is no wonder that the three-and-a-half hour movie is a modern-day masterpiece.
The all-star cast includes Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint, Ralph Richardson, Peter Lawford, Lee J. Cobb, Sal Mineo, John Derek, Hugh Griffith, Martin Milner, George Maharis, Gregory Ratoff, and Esther Ofarim.
“Exodus” was popular in worldwide theatrical release for producer Otto Preminger and United Artists. The film won a single Academy Award for Best Musical Score (Ernest Gold), with two other nominations: Best Supporting Actor (Sal Mineo) and Best Cinematography (Sam Leavitt).
