Director-screenwriter Alex Garland has turned out a smart science fiction film called “Ex Machina.” This slick and engrossing thriller tells the story of a wealthy businessman (Oscar Isaac) who creates humanoid robots. He asks a computer programmer (Domhnall Gleeson) to analyze and evaluate his creations. The high drama proceeds from there.
This film is Garland’s first directorial effort; his previous project was producing and writing the inferior “Dredd” of 2012. He did a much better job writing the screenplay for this movie; it keeps the audience guessing what will happen right up to the end.
The supporting cast includes Alicia Vikander, Sonoya Mizuno, Symara Templeman, Lina Alminas, Corey Johnson, Gana Bayarsaikhan, and Tiffany Pisani. Stars Gleeson and Isaac are engaged in quite a battle of wits throughout most of the picture. If you enjoyed the pair here, both are stars of “Star Wars 7” coming out this December. Meanwhile, this independently produced film “Ex Machina” is a watchable view on DVD right now!
