My Review

“Escape Plan” is a surprisingly good action thriller starring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Director Mikael Hafstrom (“Shanghai” 2010) and screenwriters Miles Chapman and Jason Keller have put together a good showcase picture for the two veteran film personalities.

Stallone plays engineer Ray Broslin, who must escape from the world’s most secure prison. He is helped by fellow jailbird Emil Rottmayer (Schwarzeneggar). While not Shakespearean-like thespians, Sly & Arnold deliver their own winsome brands of performing, familiar to movie audiences. They do not disappoint here. This is probably the first time in his career that Arnold plays someone of his own German/Austrian background on screen, and one of his first roles since leaving his job as Governor of Calfornia.

Rounding out the cast are Jim Caviezel as the warden, Amy Ryan and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Sly’s partners, as well as Vincent D’Onofrio, Sam Neill, Vinnie Jones, Matt Gerard, Faran Tahir, Graham Beckel, and Caitriona Balfe, soon to become famous as Claire Fraser of television’s historic drama “Outlander” starting in 2014. “Escape Plan” was a success in theatrical release for Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate Films.
