“Escape from the Planet of the Apes” tells the story of three chimpanzees who escape their world before it’s destruction. When they travel back in time to present-day Los Angeles (via space ship), the humans treat them as scientific experiments until they attempt to escape. Director Don Taylor (“Ride the Wild Surf” 1964) did an excellent job of putting together this third in the “Planet of the Apes” film franchise. The intelligent screenplay was penned by Paul Dehn.
The cast includes Roddy McDowell, Kim Hunter, and Sal Mineo as the three chimps, Bradford Dillman, Natalie Trundy, Eric Braeden, Albert Salmi, Jason Evers, Ricardo Montalban, John Randolph, Harry Lauter, M. Emmet Walsh, Roy Glenn, Peter Forster, and William Windom as the President of these United States. The very watchable “Escape from the Planet of the Apes” was a hit at the box office for producer Arthur P. Jacobs, APJAC Productions, and 20th Century Fox. This film was followed by “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes” in 1972.
