My Review

“Easy to Wed” is a musical comedy featuring Esther Williams as a debutante whose reputation is smeared by a scandalous newspaper article. Her father sues the paper, but they fight back with a reporter, played by Van Johnson, doing further investigative reporting on Williams and family. The wacky comedy proceeds from there, well directed by Edward Buzzell (“Best Foot Forward” 1943), from a good script by Dorothy Kingsley.

Williams and Johnson were so successful in 1945’s “Thrill of a Romance” that MGM cast them in a second picture. There were even some water scenes which is the natural habitat of Esther Williams. Co-stars include Lucille Ball, Keenan Wynn, Cecil Kellaway, June Lockhart, Ben Blue, Grant Mitchell, Josephine Whittell, Paul Harvey, Jonathan Hale, James Flavin, Sondra Rogers, and organist Ethel Smith and baritone opera singer Carlos Ramirez as themselves.

“Easy to Wed” was a big hit at the box office for producer Jack Cummings and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. This Technicolor movie was based on the 1936 screwball comedy “Libeled Lady” starring Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy, and Spencer Tracy.
