My Review

“Easter Parade” is a musical film about a Broadway star whose dancing partner goes solo, and he must select a new one. His choice turns out to not be not a great fit in his act, and but he realizes he has problems when he starts falling in love with her. Charles Walters (“Good News” 1947) kept a tight rein on this production with top rate songs by Irving Berlin and a score by Johnny Green and Roger Eden, which won the movie’s sole Academy Award.

Fred Astaire and Judy Garland were the film’s headliners, with excellent results. Co-stars include Peter Lawford, Ann Miller, Jules Munshin, Clinton Sundberg, Richard Beavers, and Jimmy Dodd and Lola Albright in uncredited roles. The excellent script was penned by Sidney Sheldon, Frances Goodrich, and Albert Hackett. Director Walters and star Astaire took care of the choreography.

The watchable Technicolor MGM musical “Easter Parade” was the fifth highest grossing movie of 1948 for producer Arthur Freed and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The songs written by Irving Berlin were the real stars of the show including “Easter Parade,” “Steppin’ Out With My Baby,” “We’re a Couple of Swells,” “I Love a Piano,” and “Better Luck Next Time.”
