“East Side, West Side” is a crime drama about a philandering investment banker whose former mistress is found dead. There are several suspects, and it is up to the police detective and an investigative reporter to find out who the guilty parties are. Mervyn LeRoy (“Gold Diggers of 1933” 1933) tightly directed this film from a marvelous script by Isobel Lennart, who in turn based it on Marcia Davenport’s 1947 novel of the same name.
The cast includes James Mason as the naughty banker, Barbara Stanwyck as his wife, Ava Gardner as the mistress, William Conrad as the police detective, Van Heflin as the reporter, as well as Cyd Charisse, Nancy Davis, Gale Sondergaard, William Frawley, Douglas Kennedy, Raymond Greenleaf, Beverly Michaels, Lisa Golm, Tom Powers, and Vito Scotti. (Nancy Davis is the future First Lady Nancy Reagan, and has a small part here, one of about thirteen feature films she appeared in.) “East Side, West Side” is a watchable film from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
